“MATCHA GIRL”

I composed an original score for a four-plus-minute Squarespace spot for The Adam Friedland Show called “Matcha Girl,” a project that was both creatively rewarding, technically demanding, and hey it’s also pretty funny.

The turnaround was fast—roughly 24 hours—and the spot featured very little dialogue, which meant the music needed to carry a significant amount of emotional weight. From the outset, the goal was something playful but poignant, with a tone reminiscent of like Annie Hall: quirky, sincere, and emotionally grounded.

Rather than accentuating any gags, I focused on shaping the emotional arc of the piece—supporting moments of connection and reflection, particularly toward the end of the spot when the narrative lands on a genuine human beat. The score is fully original, built from scratch, and leans on woodwinds, small melodic ideas, and a gradual orchestral build that culminates in a more expansive finale.

Even under a tight deadline, the collaboration was a joy. I love working with Adam and his team, and this project was a great example of trusting the music to play things straight, supporting the humor to speak for itself. Fingers crossed they make a sequel and I get to do it again.
